We had the honor of sitting down with pop-punk newcomer, Jassin Gharib to chat about their new single “i don’t have co-workers, i have undiagnosed adhd and a superiority complex’. Check out our conversation below:
Hi! Thanks so much for taking the time to chat with us – can you introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! Thank you for having me! I am Jassin Gharib, I’m a big Magic the Gathering nerd, I love my cat Armageddon and the “roll for sandwich” guy on TikTok.
Congratulations on the release of your single “i don’t have co-workers, i have undiagnosed adhd and a superiority complex” – what made you choose this as your lead single?
Thank you so much! I think it’s a really smooth transition from my previous releases to the new stuff because of how pop punk-y it is. It was also the song that inspired me to make the EP in the first place. It’s the starting point from which I continued to write and flesh out the rest of the EP’s story; it felt very natural to lead with this one.
Can you tell us a little bit about the song’s music video?
For sure! First of all, it was super spontaneous – it was the day after (our drummer) Daniel’s birthday and we were absolutely destroyed, tired, just done. Plus, we were poorly equipped but we pulled through and Jan (our videographer) saved us in post. Some of the little clips in there are from some German educational film about the process of distillation from the 80s (I think). Distillation being a separation method, I thought that was a good fit for a song that’s essentially about breaking up, so I asked Jan to put those in. The rest of the clips is just us being friends and goofing around a little.
You dive into a plethora of genres with your music which is incredibly exciting – what would you say inspires your music and songwriting the most?
Other than my own struggles, worries, thoughts etc., it’s mostly other artists around me. People come up with crazy stuff and I really enjoy when I listen to a song and I hear something I didn’t expect. I love when songs get a little weird but the artist still manages to make it make sense. Trying new things or approaching things differently is a lot of fun to me even though it can be very frustrating as well.
You’ve been gaining a ton of traction online this year, which is incredibly exciting! Why do you think that building an online community of fans is essential in this day and age?
I don’t know! Personally, I love being part of an online community because I get to connect with all different kinds of individuals in the scene, each with their own story of why they do what they do and where they wanna go. It’s just exciting to see them walk their own paths and share experiences and have fun along the way. You’d think you’d look left and right more, comparing yourself to others but I feel like with how transparent most people are even with their struggles, it’s been a very uplifting experience for me to see so far. I’ve felt more genuine support from people online than from some local artists to be honest. And I can only hope that people see me as another positive source of energy within that constellation.
I love ending interviews on a fun note and with Spring in full bloom I have to ask – what’s your favorite song to listen to when the weather starts to get warmer?
Tough choice but I’ve been obsessed with M.A.G.S. lately, so probably Wait by M.A.G.S.
Thanks so much for taking the time to speak with us! Anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you, I appreciate the opportunity!! Hope y’all enjoy the single and the EP and the art my wonderful friends created for this release!
