Review: Super Whatevr At Starland Ballroom 11/10/18

The air was cold, the sky was dark at 5pm, and the pre-teens were out with a vengeance to make something of this sullen Saturday night. You guessed it; Waterparks was playing Starland Ballroom. Fall 2018 has been an incredible time for tour lineups, and The Entertainment Tour was no exception featuring De’wayne Jackson, NG, Super Whatevr, and I Don’t Know How But They Found Me as support.

De’wayne Jackson and NG were a bit of a surprise as both artists seemingly are hip-hop acts, yet the crowd was excited all the same, jumping around and getting hyped up for the show to continue. The real party seemed to start when Super Whatevr hit the stage a couple of hours into the show.

Super Whatevr was energetic from the jump, captivating their audience before the first song even began playing as their drummer sound checked and got everything in order.

It was apparent how wholesome and genuine the guys in Super Whatevr are by the way the vocalist Skylar Mckee spoke to the crowd, specifically during “Someone Somewhere Somehow” about his cousin who committed suicide; introducing the song by telling the crowd to “take care of each other” which at times can seem so small yet such an impactful statement to a young crowd dealing with so much uncertainty in their lives.

Later in the show, Super Whatevr decided to take personal to a whole new level, stage diving into the crowd and crowd surfing, slowly transitioning into the bands’ second to last song, “Misquote”; which was without a doubt one of the most well received of the night. The second the first chord began to play, the crowd starting clapping in rhythm and moving to the beat.

The always smiling, energetic group was never dull to watch; whether it was watching Gianni (guitarist) sing the words to the crowd, or the constant dancing that was happening on stage, it was no doubt that the band was having a really great time. An added bonus was how inherently kind the band was to talk to after the show, as each and every one of them stopped to make time for every fan to chat.

After much dancing, jumping, and an abundance of crowdsurfing (from both the fans and the band), Super Whatevr’s set shortly came to an end, Skylar telling the crowd just before the last song that “I wanna see a circle pit, I wanna see a wall of death, I wanna see stage dives. Don’t hurt each other, let’s have some fun”

With the abrupt ending of “Good Luck” and a quick “Thank you, goodnight!” from Skylar, the set had come to a close. Super Whatevr has an energy unmatched to any other musical performance that I’ve seen, with the ability to captivate a crowd that may not know the band otherwise. I’m looking forward to seeing Super Whatevr again in the near future.
